WHAT CAN AFFECT MY FEET?

Trauma, infection, skin disease, and even simply bearing weight on the feet can cause changes on the skin including toes and heels. Corns and calluses are an area of thickened skin caused by friction and pressure. Juvenile plantar dermatosis occurs in children on the sole of the front part of the foot and on the toes.
Foot infections include warts; the common disease athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), which is caused by a foot fungus that thrives in warm, humid and damp areas such as showers and changing rooms, gyms or swimming pools; and a bacterial infection called pitted keratolysis, which is also associated with warm, damp feet. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a viral infection causing blisters of not only the feet but also the palms and mouth. The infection usually appears as dry, flaky skin or a white area in between the toes, which may or may not itch. Other most common skin conditions are psoriasis and eczema.

WHY TREATMENT IS NECESSARY?

If left untreated infections inside your body can cause more serious health problems than those on your skin. Fungal skin infections can cause cracks or blistering. A thickened nail can cause excess pressure in a shoe and cause pain. A fungal infection of the nail, if left untreated can spread further and become more problematic to more than just the nail. The excess pressure in various nail conditions due to increased thickness can lead to ulceration, involution and ingrowing nails, and corns can form under the nails too.

WHY FOOTCARE IS IMPORTANT?

Your feet were made for walking, and it’s important not to tiptoe around the importance of foot health. Despite the distance from your heart, the health of your feet can impact your overall health. It’s important not to ignore foot pain. If your feet hurt, it’s time to schedule an appointment. As a matter of fact, your feet should be checked regularly even before there is a problem.

Three important reasons to take care of your feet include quality of life, productive work and regular physical activity. Your quality of life is directly linked to your ability to be self-sufficient. Activities like working, shopping and walking are just a few of the daily living activities that make you self-sufficient. If you have foot problems or your feet hurt, you won’t be functioning at your best. Even if you have a desk job, you still need to get up occasionally. Poor foot health can impede work performance and even result in lost time from work. And with poor foot health, you’re less likely to engage in physical activity. The result is a higher risk of disease, such as heart disease and diabetes, reduced endurance and loss of muscle mass. And if you already have a chronic condition like diabetes, you’ll want to check with your doctor to be certain that you’re doing everything possible to keep your feet healthy. Preventative foot care keeps you on your toes and also helps lessen the need for foot surgery.

If you are concerned about the condition of your feet, please feel free to contact and book in for a consultation.
